I’ve spent the last few weeks preparing to write again and restart this blog (and some new projects). Maybe I’ve just done the herbalism thing for too long at this point, but despite needing to focus my attention elsewhere for the last year or two herbalism is still where my heart is.
AI hit the freelance writing and publishing industry hard and then started to take the warehouse jobs I was working. I refuse to sell out and use AI to game the system with shoddy articles in a quantity over quality grab, but that meant I had to take some time to figure out what form my writing career would take next. I’m currently cleaning houses for a living, but that is taking a heavy toll on my body due to dysautonomia and hypermobility issues.
Things look very different for the online landscape now. So while I will be posting occasionally here on the blog, I’m planning to focus my writing on Substack. This option will allow me to create quality work and earn a living from it without needing to rely so much on the whims of social media companies and the vagaries of search engines and AI.
Moving to Substack
Substack allows me to publish articles directly to an email list, which bypasses all my concerns about my content being used to train AI. It also negates the need to write for search engines, which is grand because Google is now giving people an AI summary instead of sending them to the blog anyway!
Additionally, Substack has a built in feed similar to social media accounts so I will be able to publish little daily thoughts and updates there using the Notes feature.
On Substack, you’ll be able to find
- new Indie Herbalist articles on home herbalism, herb gardening, and emergent herbal first aid/emergency preparedness
- my new Southern Herbalism project focusing on detailed native plants monographs, native plant conservation, and historical herbal books
- Pink Dandelion, a newsletter focusing on emergency preparedness and survival skills for the neurodivergent and queer communities.
You can subscribe to any or all of the individual publications here:
You can also Follow me on Substack if you have a Substack account and want the social media aspects (Do that here).
Building on Ko-fi
I’m on Ko-fi, too. It’s a little like Patreon, but better. This is where you can find all of the neat printable goodies I’ve been working on for Indie Herbalist and Pink Dandelion. It also has a built in social media type feed so I can cross post my social media content there!
Social Media
I will be getting back onto Instagram and Tiktok, too! Video content will be posted on TikTok and Instagram Reels.
Short and sweet social media style updates will be posted on Threads, Ko-fi, and Substack. Pick one or multiple, it’s up to you! The posts on all these platforms will be identical cross-posting for now.
Posting Schedules
I’ve scheduled new articles on each Substack once a week on Thursdays, and new printables should drop on Ko-fi on Thursdays as well. The blogs will also be getting a new weekly post for now!
Social media updates will most likely beposted Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
